In short: Since their arrival in 2000, the Sacramento River Cats have dominated minor league attendance and championship records. From their origins as a relocated Canadian franchise to their current role as a San Francisco Giants affiliate, the team has redefined the standard for success in the Pacific Coast League.

The Sacramento River Cats were born in 2000 after Art Savage purchased the Vancouver Canadians and relocated the franchise to West Sacramento. Playing at what was then known as Raley Field, the team immediately captured local interest, leading all of minor league baseball in attendance for nine consecutive seasons. This popularity persisted, with the team drawing over 672,000 fans in 2015 alone. The organization's stability was further cemented by its long-standing affiliation with the Oakland Athletics, which lasted 15 years before the team became the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants in 2015.

On the field, the River Cats have been a powerhouse. They have secured 12 division titles and five Pacific Coast League championships. Their championship success includes back-to-back league titles in 2003 and 2004, followed by another pair in 2007 and 2008. In both 2007 and 2008, the team successfully translated their league dominance into Triple-A National Championship victories. Notably, the team’s history is deeply intertwined with the city's baseball legacy; Sacramento was a charter member of the Pacific Coast League in 1903, and the River Cats remain the only city from that original group still hosting a team today.

The team's trajectory has seen significant shifts in recent years. Following the death of Art Savage in 2009, his widow, Susan Savage, managed the team until selling a majority interest to the Sacramento Kings in 2022. The landscape of the sport also changed in 2021 during a major restructuring of minor league baseball, which saw the team briefly organized into the Triple-A West before the Pacific Coast League name was restored in 2022. Looking ahead, the River Cats face a unique period as they prepare to share Sutter Health Park with the major-league Oakland Athletics, who are scheduled to play in Sacramento from 2025 through 2027 before their planned move to Las Vegas.
