The $3.5 million stadium that once hosted the world's biggest stars
In short: From the Grateful Dead and U2 to Real Madrid and Supercross, Sam Boyd Stadium was much more than a local football field. For nearly five decades, this Nevada venue served as a high-stakes crossroads for global icons, professional leagues, and massive sporting spectacles.
Opened on October 23, 1971, Sam Boyd Stadium began as a $3.5 million project known originally as Las Vegas Stadium. Over its 49-season tenure as the home of the UNLV Rebels, the venue underwent several identity shifts, including names like Las Vegas Silver Bowl and Sam Boyd Silver Bowl, before settling on its final name in 1994. The stadium's capacity grew significantly over time, expanding from an initial 15,000 seats to a peak of 36,800 in 1999.
The stadium's versatility allowed it to host a diverse array of global talent. In the 1990s, the Grateful Dead performed 14 shows there, while U2 played massive sets, including a 2009 performance for 42,2 and13 fans. The arena was also a cornerstone for motorsports, hosting the AMA Supercross Championship finale annually from 1990 to 2019, and the Monster Jam World Finals for 19 editions between 2000 and 2018.
International sports also found a home in Whitney, Nevada. The venue hosted the USA Sevens rugby tournament from 2010 to 2019, drawing over 60,000 fans in 2012, and even hosted a friendly match where Real Madrid defeated Santos Laguna in 2012. While the arrival of Allegiant Stadium in 2020 effectively ended the stadium's era as a primary football hub, its legacy remains tied to the era of massive, multi-purpose spectacles.
Today, the stadium's future is uncertain. Following the relocation of UNLV to Allegiant Stadium, Clark County purchased the facility for $5 million. While the site has recently served as a temporary home for programs like San Jose State during the pandemic, no permanent plans for the site have been announced.
