From soccer player to AFL premiership star in just nine months
In short: In 2016, Sam Draper was a soccer player who had only played Australian Rules Football for a few months. By 2'17, he was a top draft pick. This is the remarkable story of a rapid ascent, career-threatening injuries, and a late-career move to glory.
Sam Draper’s journey into professional Australian Rules Football was remarkably brief. After spending his youth playing soccer, he switched codes during his final year of high school in 2016. Having only begun playing the sport in February of that year, he was selected with the first draft pick in the 2017 AFL rookie draft by Essendon.
His career has been defined by both physical brilliance and significant injury setbacks. While playing for Essendon's reserves in 2019, Draper suffered an ACL tear that sidelined him for nearly a year. He later faced a syndesmosis injury in 2021 and a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2025. Despite these hurdles, he became a fan favourite, known for his physical style of play and a signature mullet hairstyle.
A pivotal moment arrived when Draper decided to leave Essendon to exercise his free agency rights. After nine seasons with the club, his move to the Brisbane Lions was confirmed on October 4, 2025. The transition proved transformative. In his 2026 season, Draper achieved career highs in goals and hitouts, playing 26 games and appearing in four finals.
The pinnacle of this journey occurred during the 2026 AFL Grand Final, where Draper kicked a goal and secured a premiership in his debut season with Brisbane. This followed a period of statistical dominance where he averaged 21 hitouts per game and kicked 17 goals across the 2026 season.
