In short: Sam Houston State University's football program has navigated a complex evolution of conferences and eras. From a 1912 debut to a 2020 FCS National Championship, the Bearkats have balanced deep-rooted rivalries with a steady ascent into the highest tiers of collegiate athletics.

The Bearkats have fielded a football team since 1912, though their history is marked by strategic pauses. The program suspended operations during World War I (1918), World War II (1943–1945), and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, with the latter featuring a make-up season in 2021. Throughout their history, the team has moved through various affiliations, including the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Lone Star Conference, and the Southland Conference, before making a significant jump to the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in the 2023–24 season.

The program's trophy case includes two national championships across different eras. One was claimed in 1964 as a member of the NAIA, where they played to a tie against the Concordia Cobbers to become co-champions. The second arrived in the 2020–21 season, when the Bearkats defeated South Dakota State 23–21 to secure their first FCS National Championship. This success was bolstered by coaches like K. C. Keeler stands as the sole head coach to secure FCS championships at two distinct universities, alongside Willie Fritz, who guided his squad to consecutive national championship games during 2011–2012.

The team's identity is also tied to its geography and rivalries. While they have historically played at Bowers Stadium, they are temporarily moving to Shell Energy Stadium in Houston for 2025 renovations. They also maintain a storied rivalry with Stephen F. Austin, known as the Battle of the Piney Woods, which is Texas' second longest FCS rivalry. Despite the move to Conference USA, the Bearkats continue to produce professional talent, with 30 alumni having played in the NFL.
