From football quarterback to country music chart-topper
In short: Before signing with MCA Nashville in 2014, Sam Hunt was an athlete attempting a professional sports career. Today, he is a genre-blending force, known for infusing country with R&B and pop elements to break long-standing industry records.
Sam Hunt's path to stardom was far from linear. A former quarterback at Middle Tennessee State University and later the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Hunt spent his college years focusing on football and studying philosophy before graduating with an economics degree. His musical journey began almost by accident; while teaching himself guitar after practice, he was encouraged by college roommates to perform in local bars.
The transition to professional music was a leap of faith. After an unsuccessful tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008, Hunt moved to Nashville with little more than some food, two mattresses, and his mother's minivan. He spent several years writing for established stars like Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban before his own solo career ignited.
His debut studio album, Montevallo, released in October 2014, fundamentally shifted the landscape of modern country. This record saw unmatched triumph, as Hunt became the initial country musician since Billy Ray Cyrus to lead three country charts at once during the Nielsen SoundScan period. Furthermore, he was the first country singer since Clint Black to hold both the top year-end album and single spots with 'Take Your Time' and Montevallo.
Critics have noted his distinct delivery, describing it as a mix of speaking and rapid-fire singing. This stylistic choice, combined with his ability to blend soul and southern R&B, has drawn comparisons to Ray Charles's historic 1960s reinterpretation of country music. His success has been cemented by multiple awards, including an American Music Award for New Artist of the Year in 2015.
