In short: In 1945, three struggling Dammam clubs faced a shared crisis: they had passion but no revenue. A strategic unification changed everything, eventually producing a powerhouse that would become the first Saudi side to conquer both domestic leagues and international trophies.

The story of Al-Ettifaq began with a financial struggle in 1941. Three separate clubs in Dammam—Al-Taawoun, Al-Sha'ab, and Al-Shabab—were successfully gathering local supporters but lacked the funds to sustain their sporting activities. In 1945, a meeting at the home of Faris Al-Hamid, then the minister of sport, proposed a solution: a merger. The new entity, named 'Al-Ettifaq' to signify 'the agreement,' received government funding in exchange for a share of ownership.

This unified club eventually produced legendary figures like Khalil Al-Zayani. A product of the club's youth academy, Zayani began playing as a defender at just 15 years old in 1962. By age 16, he was named captain by manager Mohammed Hassan Khairi. His leadership helped the club secure the Crown Prince Cup in 1965 and later transitioned into a managerial role, guiding the club through the establishment of the national league.

The club's golden era arrived in the early 1980s. During the 1982–83 season, Al-Ettifaq achieved a historic feat by remaining undefeated through the end of the season, the first Saudi club ever to do so. That same year, they secured their first league title. This momentum carried into the international arena, where they became the first Saudi team to win an international trophy by claiming the 1984 Arab Club Champions Cup, followed by further regional successes in the late 1980s.
