How a single night in a London studio created a global dance anthem
In short: In 2009, David Guetta and Akon met at a concert and decided to collaborate immediately. They rented a studio in London and wrote the hit 'Sexy Bitch' in just one night, launching a track that would dominate international charts for months.
The creation of 'Sexy Bitch' was an exercise in spontaneous collaboration. After appearing alongside Kelly Rowland for 'When Love Takes Over', Akon suggested a partnership to David Guetta. The duo moved straight to a London studio, completing the track in a single session. The song, which features a driving 8-bit style beat at 130 beats per minute, was released as part of Guetta's 2009 album, One Love.
While the song's production received praise, its lyrical content and visual presentation sparked significant debate. Critics like Nick Levine of Digital Spy found the hook and beats 'bearable' despite the lyrics, while others, such as Eric Lyndal Martin of PopMaterms, questioned the song's lyrical depth. The track's commercial reach was immense, reaching number one in the United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, and New Zealand. In the United States, it became Guetta's first top five hit on the Billboard Hot 100, eventually earning triple platinum certification with over 3.5 million digital downloads by 2014.
The song's impact extended beyond the dancefloor into international diplomacy. In March 2010, Buddhist groups in Sri Lanka protested the music video, citing the presence of Buddha statues in the background as offensive. This led the Sri Lankan government to prohibit Akon from entering the country on a visa. Akon responded by stating he was unaware of the statue's presence in the footage and expressed his respect for religious beliefs, while condemning violence.
