From a car crash to the global screen: Shabana Azeez
In short: Shabana Azeez's path to stardom began with a literal crash. After a failed audition and a period of administrative work, she navigated the complexities of representation in Hollywood to land a major role in an HBO Max drama. Her journey highlights the meticulous preparation behind modern performance.
Born in Adelaide in 1997 to Indo-Fijian parents, Shabana Azeez was raised in a household that prioritized academic achievement. She attended St Aloysius College, where she participated in the choir and the senior debating team. Her initial foray into acting was marked by a significant setback: she crashed her car while traveling to a drama school audition at the end of Year 12. Although that specific audition was unsuccessful, she continued her education by pursuing a double degree in Arts and Media at the University of Adelaide. It was only later, while working in an administrative role at Mercury CX, that her career began to take shape when her boss secured her an audition for a short film.
Azeez's breakout moment came in 2023 with the film Birdeater. To portray Irene, a woman experiencing emotional abuse and coercive control, Azeez conducted extensive research into real-life testimonies. This commitment to authenticity earned her critical acclaim and secured her professional management after the film screened at South by Southwest. This period of her career established her reputation for deep character immersion, a trait she would carry into her international work. She also balanced her early acting career with diverse roles, including appearing in a comedy band called The Coconuts and working as a standardized patient in medical settings.
Her casting in the HBO Max series The Pitt in 2024 served as a major milestone for representation. Azeez revealed that her character, Victoria Javadi, was not originally written as South Asian, and she initially feared her race might hinder her chances of booking the role. To prepare for the demanding medical drama, Azeez engaged in rigorous preparation: she watched American teen dramas, read romance novels, and studied academic research on loneliness. She also participated in a two-week boot camp to learn medical procedures and toured hospitals to interview actual medical students. This level of preparation ensures that her portrayals remain grounded in reality, even as she moves into high-profile roles like the 2026 series The Airport Chaplain, where she interviewed real airport workers to inform her performance.
