The debut album that turned a bar-band dream into 5 million sales
In short: In 1990, the Black Crowes released an album so tight it was described as what 'bar-band dreams are made of.' From its roots in a heroin-inspired riff to its status as a commercial juggernaut, Shake Your Money Maker defined a specific era of rock swagger.
The journey to the debut began in 1984 when brothers Chris and Rich Robinson formed Mr. Crowe's Garden. It wasn't until 1988 that producer George Drakoulias discovered them in New York City, leading to a signing with Def American Recordings and a name change to the Black Crowes. The recording sessions for their debut took place throughout the summer of 1989 in Atlanta and Los Angeles, aiming to capture a streamlined, high-energy groove.
The album's identity is deeply rooted in blues history, taking its title from an Elmore James classic. One of its most enduring tracks, 'She Talks to Angels,' features a riff written by Rich Robinson when he was just 17 years old; the lyrics were inspired by a girl Chris Robinson knew in Atlanta who struggled with heroin addiction. The band also secured their commercial breakthrough by covering Otis Redding's 'Hard to Handle,' which eventually reached No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Critical reception was complex and often debated. While Rolling Stone readers voted them 'Best New American Band' in 1990, other critics were more cynical about their authenticity. Entertainment Weekly famously compared them to a 'self-conscious imitation' of the early Rolling Stones, noting they weren't 'authentic bluesmen' but possessed enough energy to succeed. Despite this scrutiny, the album peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and remains the band's best-selling work.
The legacy of the record continues through various iterations. A 30th anniversary edition released in February 2021 included remastered tracks alongside previously unreleased material, including a live set from Center Stage in Atlanta recorded in 1990. While many digital versions now feature only 10 songs, the original sessions at Soundscape Studios yielded several bonus tracks that highlight the band's prolific output during their formative years.
