In short: Founded in 1975, Shaft spent decades performing behind-the-scenes color work for giants like Sunrise. However, a strategic shift in 2004 toward a unique, director-led visual identity transformed the studio from an industry workhorse into a creator of cult-classic masterpieces.

For much of its early history, Shaft operated primarily as a sub-contractor. From its founding by Hiroshi Wakao on September 1, 1975, the studio focused on essential services like cel painting and color coordination for larger entities, including Sunrise and Pierrot. It wasn't until 1984 that the studio transitioned into a primary animation studio with the series Elves of the Forest, and it took until 1987 to release its first wholly-original production, the OVA Yume kara, Samenai. Early projects included work on Brave Raideen. The studio also assisted Pierrot with Urusei Yatsura: Only You.

The studio's modern identity was forged through a pivotal partnership with director Akiyuki Shinbo. After seeing Shinbo's work on The SoulTaker and Le Portrait de Petit Cossette, CEO Mitsutoshi Kubota sought to build a uniquely identifiable brand around Shinbo's avant-garde cinematography. This era, often referred to as 'Team Shinbo,' began in 2004 with Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase and included key collaborators like Shin Oonuma and Tatsuya Oishi. This period was marked by collaborations with studios Gainax and TNK. Such partnerships produced works like Mahoromatic.

This stylistic evolution led to massive commercial and critical success. The 2009 series Bakemonogatari became a hallmark of the studio's aesthetic, earning praise for its striking visual qualities. Two years later, the 2011 smash hit Puella Magi Madoka Magica arrived, ranking among Japan's most profitable anime releases. Together, the Monogatari and Madoka Magica franchises have maintained some of the highest average sales for DVDs and Blu-Rays in the industry. The studio's success was further bolstered by the Monogatari series. These productions achieved record-breaking sales for physical media.
