The club that survived every relegation but lost its title
In short: Shanghai Shenhua is a titan of Chinese football, standing as one of the few clubs never relegated since the league's 2004 foundation. Yet, its history is a complex tapestry of state ownership, high-profile celebrity signings, and a 2003 championship stripped away by a scandal of bribery.
Founded on November 1, 1951, the club's roots trace back to a 1910 team named East China. After becoming a nationalized league participant in 1951, the team was allowed to adopt the name 'Shanghai' in 1957. By 1961, they established dominance with back-to-back league titles, only to see their progress halted by the Chinese Cultural Revolution in 1966. They didn't regain their former dominance, eventually suffering a relegation in 1980 before returning to the top flight.
The modern era began on December 10, 1993, when the club reorganized into a professional entity called Shanghai Shenhua. This transition saw the hiring of former national team manager Xu Genbao, who led the team to its first professional league title in 1995. The club's identity has often been tied to its sponsors; for instance, it briefly became Shanghai Greenland Shenhua FC in 2014. However, fan backlash over the removal of 'Shenhua' from the logo forced the club to restore the name in July 2014, a move eventually mirrored in 2021 during a national 'neutral name' campaign.
The club's history is marred by significant controversy. In 2011, it was revealed that a referee had been bribed to favor Shenhua in a vital match against Shanghai COSCO Sanlin. While the club was initially spared, the Chinese FA retrospectively revoked Shenhua's 2003 league title in February 2013 and issued a six-point deduction. More recently, the club has faced financial instability, including a six-point deduction in 2022 for unpaid salaries and a 10-point deduction in 2026 for ethics violations and improper transactions.
