The golden boy who redefined New Zealand rugby league
In short: In 2014, Shaun Johnson was officially the best player in the world. From a highly anticipated debut to a career defined by spectacular solo tries and clutch field goals, discover the journey of a player who became a national icon.
Shaun Johnson’s ascent was marked by immediate fanfare. When he entered the professional scene, rugby league legend Andrew Johns noted he hadn''t been that excited about a player since witnessing the rise of Stacey Jones in 1995. This promise was realized quickly; by 2014, Johnson had secured the Rugby League World Golden Boot, an award recognizing the world's best player, having outperformed greats like Johnathan Thurston and Sam Burgess.
His playing style was characterized by high-stakes brilliance and individual athleticism. His career highlights include an 80-metre intercept try for the Kiwis in 2012 and a 70-metre solo effort for the Warriors in 2011. Beyond individual flair, he was a prolific scorer, serving as the highest point scorer for both the New Zealand Warriors and the New Zealand Kiwis at the international level. He also famously led the Kiwis to a 2014 Four Nations victory, earning Man of the Match honors.
However, his career was not without turbulence. Johnson’s tenure at the Warriors included periods of friction with coaching staff, notably his departure to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in late 2017. While his time at Cronulla was hampered by significant injuries, including a torn Achilles tendon in 2020, he eventually returned to the Warriors. His comeback helped popularize the rallying cry 'Up The Wahs,' a phrase that captured the spirit of the club during his later seasons.
