In short: Shardul Thakur didn't have a fairytale start. After a debut season where he managed just 4 wickets, he transformed into one of the most reliable all-rounders in Indian cricket, eventually earning a spot in history as a versatile weapon capable of turning games with both bat and ball.

Shardul Thakur's journey is defined by persistence. He debuted for Mumbai in the 2012–13 Ranji Trophy but struggled initially, taking only four wickets at an average of 82.0 over his first four games. However, he redeemed himself significantly in the 2013/14 season with 27 wickets and peaked in 2014/15 by snaring 48 wickets—the joint-highest for that season. This domestic consistency led to an IPL contract with Punjab in 2015 and his eventual international debut for India against Sri Lanka in August 2017.

Known as a right-arm pace bowling all-rounder, Thakur provides what many teams lack: the ability to break partnerships when pressure is highest. His technical repertoire includes a sharp outswinger for right-handed batters and the ability to extract purchase from the surface to hit the wicket. He also became a notable figure in Indian cricket history as the second player to wear the number 10 jersey after Sachin Tendulkar, a move that sparked social media controversy until he switched to number 54.

His career highlights include being part of India's squads for the 2018 and 2023 Asia Cup wins. He played a pivotal role in the historic Gabba Test against Australia, where he scored 67 runs and took 7 wickets in a single match. Despite periods out of favor due to competition or injury, Thakur recently returned to the Test side for the 2025 tour of England, contributing to a memorable 2-2 series draw. Prior to the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy campaign, Mumbai named him as their captain.

In the IPL, Thakur has been a consistent commodity, winning titles with Chennai in 2018 and 2021. After going unsold at the 2025 auction, he was drafted as a replacement for Lucknow Super Giants before being traded to Mumbai Indians in an all-cash deal later that year.
