Simona Halep: The Romanian tennis icon who reached world No. 1 without a major
In short: Simona Halep redefined Romanian tennis, becoming the first woman from her country to reach world No. 1. Known for her defensive brilliance and controlled aggression, she secured 25 WTA titles, including two majors, before retiring in 2025. Her journey from Constanța to global stardom remains a masterclass in persistence.
Born in 1991 in Constanța, Romania, Simona Halep began her tennis journey at age four. Her father, a former lower-division footballer, supported her athletic ambitions, leading to her early training on Black Sea beaches. By 2008, she had achieved junior world No. 1 status, winning the French Open junior title. Her transition to the professional circuit was marked by steady growth, breaking into the top 100 in 2010 and the top 50 by 2012.
Halep’s breakthrough came in 2013, when she won six WTA titles in a single season—a feat not seen since Steffi Graf in 1986. This performance earned her the WTA Most Improved Player award. In 2014, she reached her first Grand Slam final at the French Open and debuted in the top 10. By 2017, she ascended to world No. 1, becoming the seventh player to reach the top spot without having previously won a Grand Slam tournament.
Her major titles arrived in 2018 at the French Open and 2019 at Wimbledon, where she defeated Serena Williams. Despite her success, her career faced significant disruption in October 2022 due to a suspension for a banned substance. Although her ban was reduced in 2024, allowing her to return to the tour, she ultimately retired in 2025. Over her career, she spent 64 weeks as world No. 1 and maintained a top-10 ranking for 373 consecutive weeks.
