From record-breaking losses to a national championship appearance
In short: Sonny Dykes has experienced the extremes of college football. After coaching through the worst season in California's history, he later led the TCU Horned Frogs to a historic College Football Playoff victory and a national championship appearance, demonstrating his ability to transform struggling programs into elite contenders.
The career of Sonny Dykes is defined by dramatic shifts in fortune. After a difficult tenure at the University of California, Berkeley, where his first season in 2013 resulted in a 1–11 record—the program's worst since its inception in 1886—Dykes eventually found significant success. He moved to Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he led the Mustangs to a 10–3 record in 2019, marking the program's best performance in over thirty years.
His most recent ascent occurred at Texas Christian University (TCU). In his first season with the Horned Frogs, Dykes guided the team to a 12–1 record and their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff. This momentum culminated on December 31, 2022, when he led TCU to the program's first-ever victory in the College Football Playoff.
Dykes' journey to the head coaching ranks was built on years of specialized coaching. He served as a wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator at various institutions, including Kentucky, Texas Tech, and Arizona. At Texas Tech, he was part of a staff that orchestrated the largest comeback in NCAA Division I-A bowl history in 2006, overcoming a 31-point deficit against Minnesota to win 44–41 in overtime.
A second-generation coach, Dykes is the son of former Texas Tech head coach Spike Dykes. In the spring of 1994, his coaching journey commenced at Monahans High School in Texas as an assistant baseball coach, prior to him moving into football coaching later that year.
