The bluesman who stole a name to build a legacy
In short: Before he was a legend of the Chicago blues, he was a traveling performer using a childhood nickname for rice and milk. By adopting the name of a deceased star, he crafted a persona that bridged the gap between Mississippi dirt and European rock royalty.
Born as Alex or Aleck Miller, the man who would become Sonny Boy Williamson II was a master of reinvention. His early years were spent as a sharecropper's son in Mississippi, where he developed a 'raffish' stage persona and a unique harmonica style. He often entertained audiences with novelty acts, such as playing the harmonica with no hands or inserting one end into his mouth. During this era, he was known by nicknames like 'Rice' Miller and 'Little Boy Blue'. The transition to 'Sonny Boy Williamson' was a calculated move in the music industry. In 1941, a radio program sponsor began billing him by that name to capitalize on the fame of John Lee Williamson, a major blues star who had died in 1948. While Miller later claimed he was the original, scholars suggest his claim of being born in 1897 was a strategic ruse to appear older than the original Sonny Boy (born 1914).
It was only after the original's death that Miller's claim to the name gained a measure of legitimacy, leading biographers to distinguish them as 'I' and 'II'. Miller's career eventually reached global proportions. He moved to West Memphis, where he lived with the legendary Howlin' Wolf, even teaching the older man how to play the harmonica. By the 1960s, he became a fixture of the British blues craze, touring Europe with a custom-made two-tone suit and bowler hat. He recorded with iconic rock acts like the Yardbirds and the Animals, bridging the gap between rural American roots and the burgeoning rock scene of the 1960s.
He died in 1965 at a rooming house in Helena, Arkansas, just before a scheduled radio broadcast. His legacy remains a complex tapestry of artistic brilliance and savvy branding, cementing his place as a foundational figure in both blues and rock history.
