From Ohio high school star to the seventh overall NFL draft pick
In short: Alexander "Sonny" Styles transitioned from an Ohio high school standout to a top-tier NFL prospect. After securing a national title with the Ohio State Buckeyes, his unprecedented physical metrics at the 2026 Scouting Combine propelled him to become the seventh overall pick for the Washington Commanders.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, on November 24, 2004, Alexander Styles entered the football world with a significant lineage. The son of former NFL linebacker Lorenzo Styles, his nickname "Sonny" actually stems from his childhood tantrums, a nod to the character Sonny Corleone from The Godfather. His early athletic career at Pickerington High School Central was marked by versatility, playing both safety and basketball, even securing an OHSAA state championship in 2022.
His ascent through the college ranks at Ohio State University was defined by a successful positional transition. Initially a reserve strong safety in 2022, he moved to linebacker in 2024. That season, he played a pivotal role in the Buckeyes' national championship victory, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors after accumulating 100 tackles and six sacks. By 2025, he had risen to the role of defensive co-captain and earned All-American honors from The Sporting News.
Styles' entry into the professional ranks was propelled by a historic performance at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine. No player of his stature has achieved a 40-yard dash under 4.5 seconds, a vertical leap exceeding 40 inches, or a broad jump over 11 feet since 2003. This physical dominance led the Washington Commanders to select him seventh overall in the 2026 NFL draft. On May 8, 2026, he signed a four-year rookie contract valued at $37.2 million, choosing the number 52 in honor of legends Ray Lewis and Patrick Willis.
