From high school kicker to the WNBA’s most polarizing enforcer
In short: Sophie Cunningham transitioned from a high school football kicker to a prominent WNBA three-point specialist. After breaking scoring records at the University of Missouri, she became a viral enforcer for the Indiana Fever. Her career now balances elite athletic performance with outspoken personal convictions and a public life of faith.
Cunningham's versatility was evident early on. While a standout in basketball and volleyball at Rock Bridge High School, she famously stepped in as a kicker for the boys' football team after a teammate suffered an ACL tear, converting two out of four field goal attempts. She also competed in a youth soccer league during her grade school years. During her high school tenure, she was recognized as a five-star recruit.
Her collegiate career at the University of Missouri was defined by record-breaking production. She became the program's all-time leading scorer, averaging 17.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.0 assists over 129 starts. Her success was a family affair; both of her parents, Jim and Paula Cunningham, were also student-athletes at the university. She was a three-time first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection. Additionally, she earned third-team All-American honors during her final collegiate season.
Entering the WNBA in 2019 as the first pick of the second round for the Phoenix Mercury, Cunningham spent six seasons developing her range. She evolved from a bench player in her rookie year into a key starter, notably contributing 51 points in the 2021 postseason. By 2024, she reached career highs in defensive rebounds (141) and steals (41). She was the eighth Missouri alumna to enter the league. Her selection was the highest ever for a former Tiger.
In 2025, a trade to the Indiana Fever shifted her role into the spotlight. Known as an "enforcer" for teammate Caitlin Clark, she gained national attention for a viral ejection following a retaliatory foul. Beyond the court, Cunningham has become a public figure for her conservative stances on transgender women in sports and her role as a UFC ring girl, balancing athletic stardom with outspoken personal convictions. She shared her faith publicly and described her baptism as a life-changing event. Her political views are described by her as being in the middle.
