From scaffolding to the Premier League: the rise of Sorba Thomas
In short: Before signing for top-flight clubs, Sorba Thomas worked as a scaffolder and in retail. His journey from being released by West Ham at 16 to becoming a Premier League winger is a remarkable testament to persistence and professional growth in the competitive world of English football.
Born in Barking, London, to a Sierra Leonean father and a Welsh mother from Newport, Thomas’s career began with a setback when he was released by the West Ham United Academy at age 16. Rather than letting his professional aspirations end, he joined the youth academy at Boreham Wood, eventually making his senior debut in September 2017.
His ascent was rapid. After proving himself in the National League with Boreham Wood, he secured a move to Championship side Huddersfield Town in January 2021. His impact was immediate; by August 2021, he was named the EFL Championship Player of the Month following a standout performance that included his first professional goal against Reading. He also made his international debut for Wales in October 2021 against the Czech Republic.
Thomas's career has been defined by consistent movement and development across various tiers of the game. Following stints at Blackburn Rovers and Nantes, he joined Stoke City in June 2025, where he was voted Player of the Year for the 2025–26 season. His trajectory eventually led him to the Premier League, signing a four-year contract with Hull City on 1 September 2026.
Despite the high-stakes environment of professional football, Thomas has faced significant challenges, including the relegation of Huddersfield to League One in the 2023–24 season. However, his ability to rebound—evidenced by his inclusion in the 2025–26 EFL Championship Team of the Season—highlights the resilience required to navigate the professional leagues.
