In short: Once a dominant force in global volleyball, Japan's men's national team endured a long period of Olympic absence and struggle. Now, a new era of success is underway, as the team climbs back toward the world's elite rankings after years of rebuilding.

The history of the Japan men's national volleyball team, known as Ryujin Nippon, is defined by a spectacular golden era followed by a significant decline. During the 1960s and 1970s, the squad was a powerhouse on the Olympic stage. They secured a bronze medal at the 1964 Tokyo Games, followed by silver in Mexico in 1968, and reached the pinnacle of the sport by winning gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

However, this period of dominance was followed by a period of instability and failure to qualify for major competitions. The team missed three consecutive Olympic Games and struggled through the early 2000s, failing to win a single match during their return at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. This slump continued through the London 2012 and Rio 2016 cycles, leaving the nation far from its former glory.

In recent years, the momentum has shifted back toward success. The team reached the quarterfinals in both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, finishing seventh. This marked their strongest Olympic performance since the 1992 Barcelona Games. This resurgence is further evidenced by their recent performance in the FIVB Men's Volleyball Nations League, where they earned a bronze medal in 2023 and a silver in 2024.

As of September 2024, the team holds the sixth position in the FIVB Senior World Rankings. This climb follows a period of high-level competition in the world leagues, representing the nation's most successful results in the tournament since its inception in 2017.
