From college walk-on to NFL game-winner: the journey of Spencer Shrader
In short: Most professional athletes follow a predictable path, but Spencer Shrader’s rise to the NFL was anything but certain. Starting as a college walk-on, the placekicker navigated a volatile journey through multiple rosters and injuries to eventually secure a career-defining moment on the national stage.
Spencer Michael Shrader's professional trajectory is a testament to persistence in the highly specialized world of NFL placekickers. Born on May 19, 1999, in Westfield, Indiana, Shrader did not enter the collegiate ranks as a blue-chip recruit. Instead, he chose to walk-on for the South Florida Bulls, beginning a collegiate career defined by steady improvement and eventual high-level recognition.
His statistical progression highlights a growing reliability. During his time at South Florida, he transitioned from a 4-for-9 field goal record in 2019 to becoming a Lou Groza semifinalist in 2021, where he converted 11 of 13 attempts. After transferring to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, he set a school record in 2023 with a 54-yard field goal during a victory over NC State. This performance helped establish him as a legitimate professional prospect.
The transition to the NFL proved turbulent. After going undrafted in 2024, Shrader signed with the Indianapolis Colts, experiencing a cycle of being waived and re-signed. His resilience was rewarded when he moved between the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs, eventually hitting a game-winning field goal as time expired to secure a 30–27 win over the Carolina Panthers on November 24, 2024. Despite a significant knee injury in October 2025, Shrader's ability to perform under pressure remains his professional hallmark.
Shrader's career illustrates the precarious nature of specialist roles in professional football. His journey through the practice squads and active rosters of the Colts, Jets, and Chiefs highlights the intense competition for every spot on an NFL roster.
