How a self-taught 'late bloomer' became the NFL's most prolific scorer
In short: After college, Jason Myers had no professional interest from scouts and worked as a valet. Yet, by 2025, he would shatter NFL records, becoming the first player to surpass 200 combined points in a single season and setting a Super Bowl record for field goals.
Jason Myers' journey to professional football was far from linear. A self-described 'late bloomer' during his time at Mater Dei Catholic High School, Myers attended Marist University from 2009 to 2012, where he served as the Red Foxes' starting kicker and, later, primary punter. Despite his collegiate success, he entered the professional ranks without significant attention from scouts, spending time working as a valet and playing in the Arena Football League while refining his technique. Beyond football, he was a state championship winner in soccer. He was also recognised as the San Diego Division IV CIF Player of the Year.
The turning point arrived in August 2014 when Myers began training with NFL veteran Michael Husted. This mentorship helped him secure a tryout at the 2015 Senior Bowl, leading to his signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 3, 2015. He quickly proved his worth, earning a starting role after the Jaguars traded veteran Josh Scobee to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Myers' career is defined by remarkable statistical peaks and high-stakes precision. In 2025, he achieved a historic milestone, scoring 206 combined points across the regular season and postseason—the first player to top the 200-point mark in that combined metric. During Super Bowl LX, he set a record for the most field goals in a single game by connecting on all five attempts. His ability to perform under pressure was further cemented in 2020, when he achieved a perfect 24-of-24 record on field goal attempts for the season. His precision was highlighted in 2020 when he hit a 61-yard field goal as time expired. He also maintained a 37-game consecutive field goal streak, which remains the fourth longest in league history.
