From college walk-on to NFL star: the rise of Alex Highsmith
In short: Alex Highsmith didn't enter the NFL with a massive scholarship or high-profile recruitment. Instead, he arrived as a walk-on for the Charlotte 49ers, slowly transforming from an overlooked prospect into a dominant defensive force for the Pittsburgh Steelers through sheer persistence and record-breaking collegiate performances.
Highsmith's journey is a testament to the impact of persistence. Growing up in Wilmington, North Carolina, he was a multi-sport athlete at Eugene Ashley High School, excelling in baseball, basketball, and football. Despite his talent, college programs offered him very little interest, with only Davidson and Furman extending invitations. He eventually joined the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as a walk-on, a status that requires immense discipline to transition into professional ranks.
His collegiate career was defined by rapid, record-setting progression. After redshirting his first year, he became a starter at defensive end and earned first-team All-Conference USA honors. During his final collegiate year, he established school benchmarks by recording 21.5 tackles for loss and 14 sacks, resulting in an Associated Press third-team All-American honour. Such play drew interest from NFL scouts, who chose him 102nd overall in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In the professional ranks, Highsmith has become a cornerstone of the Steelers' defense. His impact has been marked by significant milestones, such as recording his first career interception against Lamar Jackson and his first career sack against Garrett Gilbert. His dominance has been recognized through multiple AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Beyond the field, his influence extends to the community through the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation, which supports youth through programs focused on fitness, nutrition, and academic success. Because of his commitment to local service, he was nominated for the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.
