The accidental family built on secrets, telepathy, and high-stakes espionage
In short: A master spy, an assassin, and a telepathic child form a fake family to maintain peace. This unlikely trio has captured global audiences, breaking viewership records and becoming a cultural phenomenon through a perfect blend of comedy and tension.
The animated series Spy × Family, produced by Wit Studio and CloverWorks, follows the mission of the spy known as Twilight. To investigate the political figure Donovan Desmond, Twilight adopts the persona of Loid Forger, a psychiatrist. However, the domestic arrangement is far from ordinary. His partner, Yor, is secretly the assassin Thorn Princess, and his adopted daughter, Anya, possesses the hidden ability to read minds.
Since its initial announcement in October 2021, the series has achieved unprecedented commercial success. The first season, which aired in two parts between April and December 2022, set new viewership records for TV Tokyo in time-shift audience ratings. During the summer of 2022, the show even became the highest-rated program across all Japanese stations for the July season. Its popularity extended to digital platforms, where it dominated Japanese streaming and VOD rankings for several months in 2022.
Beyond its ratings, the series has earned significant critical and industry recognition. It won Animation of the Year at the 2023 Tokyo Anime Award Festival and secured six awards at the 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards, including Best New Series and Best Comedy. The character Anya Forger has become a massive cultural icon, ranking as a top trending subject among Japan's Generation Z in 2022 and even inspiring a dedicated Tamagotchi release in June 2022. The franchise continues to expand, with a feature film, Spy × Family Code: White, released in December 2023, and subsequent animated seasons following the complex web of the Forger family's secrets.
