How one family's sudden expansion redefined a manga series' journey
In short: When Ito Narita moved due to her mother's remarriage, she discovered she had four younger brothers. What began as a struggle to adjust to a new family dynamic evolved into a sprawling multimedia franchise, spanning manga, live-action film, and a major anime adaptation.
The story follows 16-year-old Ito Narita, who begins her second year of high school alongside her eldest brother, Gen. Following her mother Saho's remarriage to Isao, Ito finds herself navigating life with four younger brothers: the taciturn Gen, the sophomore Raku, the shy 'shut-in' Shū, and the youngest, Rui, who is in third grade. This complex domestic structure serves as the emotional core of Akira Ozaki's work.
Originally serialized in Shueisha's shōjo magazine Bessatsu Margaret starting January 11, 2020, the series has seen significant expansion. As of June 2026, the manga has been collected into fifteen tankōbon volumes. The narrative's popularity has driven it across different media formats, transitioning from the printed page to the screen.
The franchise's reach includes a live-action film directed by Koichiro Miki, which premiered in Japanese theaters on December 6, 2024. This was followed by an anime television series produced by Lay-duce, which premiered on July 4, 2026. The anime, directed by Hitoshi Nanba, was designed to run for two consecutive cours, totaling 24 episodes, and has been licensed for streaming by Crunchyroll and Medialink.
The transition from a single manga series to a multi-format property highlights the enduring appeal of family-centric shōjo narratives. By moving from the initial serialization in 2020 to a major anime release in 2026, the franchise has established a significant presence in the contemporary Japanese media landscape.
