From espionage to domesticity: the evolution of a Japanese light novel
In short: How does a retired spy navigate a quiet life? In the light novel series Victoria of Many Faces, the protagonist discovers that the high-stakes skills of her past—disguises and martial arts—become surprisingly useful tools for navigating the mundane complexities of civilian life and motherhood.
Victoria of Many Faces (Tefuda ga Ōme no Bikutoria) began as a web novel on the user-generated platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō, where it was serialized by the author Syuu from September 15 to November 8, 2021. The narrative follows Chloe, a former spy for the Kingdom of Hagl. After a betrayal by her superior, she retires to the Kingdom of Ashbury under the alias Victoria Sellers. The story shifts from high-stakes espionage to a domestic focus as she adopts an abandoned girl named Nonna, realizing her covert training can be repurposed for her new life.
The series gained significant commercial momentum, being acquired by Media Factory for publication under the MF Books imprint in July 2022. It has since expanded into multiple media formats: a manga adaptation illustrated by Komo Ushino began on Kadokawa's ComicWalker in December 2022, and an anime television series produced by Studio Deen aired in the summer of 2026.
The anime, directed by Nobukage Kimura, features a soundtrack by Moe Hyūga and was streamed globally via Crunchyroll. A ninth-place position within the tankōbon division at the 2023 Next Light Novel Awards demonstrates the series' achievement. While the light novel remains the primary source, the franchise has established a footprint in international markets, with Yen Press securing licenses for both the novel and manga in 2024. The series explores the transition from a life of secrecy to one of responsibility, blending action-oriented skills with the nuances of everyday existence.
