The last civilized stop before the great American westward expansion
In short: Before the Lewis and Clark Expedition ventured into unknown western territories, they paused in a French-Canadian settlement known as Les Petites Côtes. This river port served as a vital gateway for trade and exploration, bridging the gap between established colonial outposts and the vast, uncharted wilderness of the American West.
Founded around 1769 by French-Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette, the settlement was originally named Les Petites Côtes, meaning "The Little Hillsides." At the time, the region was under Spanish jurisdiction following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War. The early community was a mix of French-speaking colonists and Native American tribes, including the Ilini, Osage, and Missouri.
The settlement's strategic location on the Missouri River made it a crucial hub for westward trade. In 1804, it served as the final "civilized" stop for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. While waiting for Meriwether Lewis to arrive from St. Louis, William Clark and his crew spent time attending dinners and dances, preparing for their historic journey through the territory acquired via the Louisiana Purchase.
St. Charles's importance continued through the 19th century. It served as the first capital of Missouri from 1821 to 1826, hosting the legislature in rooms above a local hardware store while the "City of Jefferson" was being developed. It also acted as a primary starting point for major overland routes, including the Boone's Lick Road and the Santa Fe Trail.
The city's role as a transit hub evolved into modern infrastructure in the 20th century. In 1956, it became the site of the first claimed interstate highway project, a claim shared by Kansas and Pennsylvania. Today, it remains a significant Missouri city, with a population of 70,493 as of the 2020 census.
