A tidal island shaped by rising seas and ancient kings
In short: Rising and falling with the tides, St Michael's Mount is a Cornish landmark that has transitioned from a prehistoric landscape to a fortified stronghold. From Neolithic hunters to royal visits, this granite rock holds centuries of secrets beneath its waves and within its castle walls.
The history of St Michael's Mount begins long before its famous castle. During the Neolithic period, between 4000 and 2500 BC, humans inhabited the area, evidenced by a leaf-shaped flint arrowhead found on the lower eastern slope. Before this, during the early Mesolithic, Britain was still connected to mainland Europe across the southern North Sea. However, by the Neolithic, rising sea levels had transformed the region into an island. The mount's Cornish name, meaning 'grey rock in the woodland,' likely preserves a folk memory of a time when the area was a marshy forest rather than a tidal island.
The site's strategic importance evolved through the Middle Ages. It may have served as a monastic site from the 8th century through the early 11th century. Following a grant by King Edgar in 967 AD, the site became a priory linked to Mont-Saint-Michel in France. This connection ended in 1424 when the site was transferred to the Syon Abbey. The mount has seen significant conflict, including a 23-week siege in 1473–1474 by John de Vere, the 13th Earl of Oxford, and the occupation by the pretender Perkin Warbeck in 1497.
The island's landscape has been dramatically shaped by both human and natural forces. In 1755, a tsunami triggered by the Lisbon earthquake caused the sea to rise six feet in just ten minutes. In the modern era, the St Aubyn family has managed the estate since approximately 1650, eventually transferring much of it to the National Trust in 1954. Today, the mount remains a unique site where a functional 4 ft 6 in narrow-gauge railway still transports goods from the harbour to the castle, preserving a rare piece of industrial history.
