In short: From the heights of Serie A to the brink of total disappearance, the history of SSC Bari is a volatile saga of mergers, financial collapses, and dramatic rebirths. Discover how a club once facing extinction managed to climb back through the ranks of the Italian league system.

Founded on 15 January 1908 by a diverse group including German Floriano Ludwig and Swiss Gustavo Kuhn, Bari’s early years were defined by instability and reorganization. The club underwent several transformations, including a significant merger in 1928 when Bari FC and US Ideale joined to form Unione Sportiva Bari. While the club enjoyed a golden era in the 1930s and 1940s—reaching a peak 7th-place finish in 1947—its history has been marked by frequent movement between Italy's top two divisions.

The club's financial trajectory has been equally turbulent. By 2014, Bari faced a debt of approximately €30 million, leading to a formal declaration of bankruptcy on 10 March 2014. After two failed auctions in April and May of that year, a consortium led by Gianluca Paparesta finally acquired the club's assets in May 2014. This period of instability continued into 2018, when the club was excluded from Serie B due to financial reasons, necessitating a complete restart in Serie D under the leadership of Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Despite these setbacks, Bari has demonstrated remarkable resilience. The club has achieved notable milestones, such as winning the Mitropa Cup in 1990 and producing future stars like Gianluca Zambrotta and Antonio Cassano. After its 2018 re-establishment, the club secured promotion to Serie C and eventually returned to Serie B on 3 April 2022. Today, the club remains a significant force in Southern Italian football, representing the most successful club from the Apulia region in all-time Serie A records.
