This lack of clarity stems from the destruction of early minute books during the First World War.
The club's history is marked by dramatic peaks and perilous troughs. They enjoyed a golden era in the 1970s under Roy Chapman, achieving a treble in 1971–72 and reaching the FA Cup Fourth Round. However, financial instability has been a recurring ghost. In the mid-to-late 1930s, the club was so desperate for funds that they survived on an appeal for £100 to pay creditors; at one point, the secretary even had to take the pitch and score a goal because they were too short of players.
The most modern brush with extinction occurred in 2009. Facing a debt of £50,000 owed to Slick Seating by July 7th, the club devised a survival scheme: selling 250 tickets at £200 each, which would be repaid via weekly draws. This maneuver successfully averted administration.
Today, the club competes in the Northern Premier League Division One West. Despite various relegations and promotions—including a stint as founder members of the Alliance Premier League—the club remains a resilient fixture of English non-league football.
