The journey of the 2024 Tamil-language film Star was far from linear. Originally, director Elan was set to collaborate with Harish Kalyan, following their previous work on Pyaar Prema Kaadhal in 2018. While the project was confirmed by the director on 5 December 2020, reports in July 2021 suggested the venture had been shelved due to creative differences between the director and Kalyan. This period of uncertainty eventually led to a significant casting change.
In August 2023, Kavin, known for his performance in Dada, was announced as the new lead. This shift coincided with the film being announced under the temporary title Kavin's Next. The production, a joint effort by Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra and Rise East Entertainment, moved into principal photography in Chennai on 1 June 2023.
The cast was further rounded out by the addition of Preity Mukhundhan and Aaditi Pohankar, playing the roles of Poonakutty and Jimikky. Upon its worldwide theatrical release on 10 May 2024, the film met with a divided critical reception. While many praised the performances, the cinematography, and Yuvan Shankar Raja's musical score, some critics found the writing and pacing lacking. For instance, Janani K of India Today rated it 2.5/5, noting it felt more like a showreel than an emotional documentation. Despite these critiques, the film achieved commercial success and later premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 7 June 2024.
