From Baltimore comedy clubs to Hollywood, the rise of Stavros Halkias
In short: Born in Baltimore to Greek immigrant parents, Stavros Halkias evolved from a local stand-up comic into a nationally recognized performer. Known for his sharp crowd work and podcasting success, he has transitioned from cult-favorite internet personality to a versatile actor appearing in major Netflix series and high-profile feature films.
Stavros Halkias began his comedy career at age 19 while attending the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. His early years were defined by the grind of the regional circuit, performing across Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. By 2012, he was recognized as Baltimore's New Comedian of the Year. His move to New York City expanded his reach, leading to appearances on platforms like Adult Swim and the New York Comedy Festival, eventually culminating in his role as a co-host of the influential podcast Cum Town from 2016 to 2022.
The 2020s marked a significant professional breakthrough for Halkias. He leveraged his digital presence—including his popular podcast Stavvy's World and his YouTube channel—to launch successful stand-up specials. His 2022 special, Live at the Lodge Room, garnered 2 million views in just three weeks, followed by the 2023 Netflix release, Stavros Halkias: Fat Rascal. His style, characterized by spontaneous crowd interaction, has become a signature element of his live performances and digital content, including his 2023 crowd-work special, Four Nights In NYC.
Beyond stand-up, Halkias has successfully pivoted to acting. His filmography includes roles in the 2024 Netflix series Tires and the 2025 Yorgos Lanthimos film Bugonia, which received multiple Academy Award nominations. He also starred in the independent comedy Let's Start a Cult. Despite his Hollywood trajectory, Halkias maintains strong ties to his roots, splitting his time between New York City and his home in Baltimore's Canton neighborhood, while continuing to collaborate with childhood friends on his professional projects.
