From a combat veteran to a Super Bowl champion: the resilience of Rocky Bleier
In short: In 1969, doctors told him he would never play professional football again. After surviving an ambush in Vietnam and sustaining severe leg injuries, Rocky Bleier faced a choice between recovery and his lifelong dream. His journey from a hospital bed in Tokyo back to the NFL is a testament to human willpower.
Born in 1946 in Appleton, Wisconsin, Robert Patrick Bleier was a standout athlete at Xavier High School before playing for the University of Notre Dame. After graduating in 1968 with a business management degree, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 16th round. However, his burgeoning NFL career was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
While serving as a squad grenadier in South Vietnam, Bleier was caught in an ambush in Hiep Duc on August 20. He suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh and a severe blast injury to his right foot from a grenade. During his recovery in Tokyo, the outlook for his football career seemed nonexistent. A pivotal moment arrived via a postcard from Steelers owner Art Rooney, who told him, "the team's not doing well. We need you."
Bleier returned to the Steelers in 1970, initially weighing only 180 pounds and struggling with intense pain. Through rigorous training, he regained his strength, reaching 212 pounds by the summer of 1974. He eventually became a vital part of the Steelers' dynasty, contributing to four Super Bowl victories. In 1976, he and teammate Franco Harris became only the second NFL duo to both rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. Bleier retired in 1980, leaving behind a legacy of grit and a career defined by overcoming the impossible.
