The only NFL coordinator to win Super Bowls with two different teams
In short: In a league defined by rigid loyalties, Steve Spagnuolo broke the mold. He is the only defensive or offensive coordinator in history to secure a Super Bowl title with two separate franchises, leading four championships in that specific role.
Spagnuolo’s coaching trajectory is marked by extreme highs and lows. After an early career under Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles (1999–2006), he became the architect of the 2007 New York Giants' defense. His aggressive, blitz-heavy strategy was instrumental in upsetting the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, where his unit sacked Tom Brady five times—his highest total for the season.
However, his path to greatness included significant professional setbacks. As head coach of the St. Louis Rams (2008–2011), he oversaw a franchise-worst 1–15 season and was eventually fired with a 10–38 record. He also faced a difficult stint in New Orleans, where his defense allowed the most yards in NFL history during the 2012 season following the suspension of head coach Sean Payton.
Reunited with Andy Reid in Kansas City in 2019, Spagnuolo's philosophy—learned from mentor Jim Johnson—emphasizes a 4–3 base with multiple blitz packages. This approach led to three more championships with the Chiefs (Super Bowls LIV, LVII, and LVIII). His leadership is so culturally ingrained that players famously adopted the phrase "In Spags We Trust" to signal their confidence in his complex decision-making.
Spagnuolo's career serves as a masterclass in defensive architecture. By utilizing smaller defensive lines and heavy corner and safety blitzes, he has coached four top-10 defenses by yardage. His ability to adapt these aggressive tactics across different rosters makes him one of the most distinct tactical minds in modern football.
