In short: Most fantasy heroes grow stronger through training, but Subaru Natsuki grows through death. Transported from a convenience store to a magical kingdom, this former hikikomori must navigate gruesome catastrophes using a terrifying ability called Return by Death to protect his friends and find his way home.

Created by Tappei Nagatsuki in 2013, Subaru Natsuki was originally intended as a web novel. His name is a reference to the Pleiades asterism, connecting him to the Seven Sisters of Greek mythology. Unlike typical isekai protagonists who possess effortless charisma, Subaru was designed to be an ordinary teenager. His initial character designs were even rejected for being too delinquent-like; editor Masahito Ikemoto requested a friendlier appearance to help audiences empathize with his emotional struggles. The character's name also draws from the Pleiades. He was voiced by Yūsuke Kobayashi in the Japanese version.

The core of the series is the 'Return by Death' ability, a concept Nagatsuki initially thought would make the protagonist stronger, but eventually used to explore character development through trauma. This mechanic forces Subaru to experience gruesome events—such as being devoured by rabbits—to gain the information necessary to prevent future catastrophes. This cycle often leaves him isolated, as the Witch of Envy, Satella, silences him whenever he attempts to explain his ability to others. This process often results in him facing horrific scenarios. His ability is allegedly a gift from the Witch of Envy.

Subaru's journey is defined by his psychological flaws, specifically his entitlement and a deep-seated inferiority complex stemming from his inability to live up to his father's reputation. This mindset led to his life as a hikikomori before his transportation. As the narrative progresses, the series shifts from a standard fantasy quest to a psychological study of how a hero overcomes extreme stress, vulnerability, and the belief that his own life has no value. He eventually learns to win support by showing humility. This transformation is a key element of his character arc.
