How a footballing giant survived civil war and political upheaval
In short: In 1970, Sudan stood atop African football as continental champions. Since then, a cycle of civil wars, political instability, and resource depletion has transformed a powerhouse into a resilient underdog, fighting to reclaim its former glory from abroad.
The Sudan national football team's history is a narrative of early dominance followed by profound struggle. The Sudan Football Association, founded in 1936, is one of Africa's oldest governing bodies. Following the introduction of the sport by British colonizers via Egypt, Sudan became a foundational pillar of the continent's footballing infrastructure. In 1957, Sudanese officials were instrumental in establishing the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Khartoum, alongside representatives from Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Africa.
The nation's golden era peaked in 1970 when Sudan hosted and won the Africa Cup of Nations. This period featured legendary figures such as captain Mustafa Azhari, top scorer Nasr El-Din Abbas, and the impactful forward Siddiq Manzul. However, the retirement of these stars, coupled with the devastation of the first and second civil wars and various political upheavals, drained the country's footballing resources. This decline made it difficult to retain international status, and the team struggled to qualify for major tournaments for decades.
Despite these hardships, Sudan has shown remarkable flashes of resurgence. After a 32-year absence, the team returned to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008. More recently, they achieved a third-place finish in the 2011 African Nations Championship and secured qualification for the 2025 AFCON. Even as ongoing civil conflict has forced the team to play matches away from home, Sudan's recent performances—including a strong start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers—demonstrate a persistent resilience in the face of national crisis.
