In short: Imagine a world where magical beings are treated as property the moment a human possesses one of their wings. In the realm of Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, this dark reality forms the backdrop for a journey of artistic ambition, where a candy crafter must navigate the ethics of slavery to achieve her dreams.

The narrative centers on Anne Halford, a gifted sugar artisan striving to become a Silver Sugar Master—a prestigious title bestowed only by royalty. To reach the capital and compete in the Royal Candy Fair, Anne purchases Challe, an obsidian warrior fairy. While Challe serves as her bodyguard, the power dynamic is defined by a systemic cruelty: in this kingdom, fairies are treated as property upon the possession of their wings. Anne, however, rejects the status quo, believing that humans and fairies can coexist as friends rather than master and slave.

Challe’s character embodies the trauma of this system. A foul-mouthed and distrustful warrior, he was previously enslaved and lost a close friend, Elizabeth, to humans. His journey with Anne is one of gradual reconciliation; he eventually agrees to stay with her after she returns his wing. This dynamic is mirrored by other fairies, such as Mithril, a water fairy who was saved from a hunter and chooses to stay with Anne as a voluntary companion, tying his wing around his neck like a scarf.

The world is further populated by complex artisans and masters. From Kat, a master who refuses to sell to those he deems unfair, to the antagonistic Jonas—a manipulator who attempted to steal Anne's work—the story explores the intersection of artistic integrity and social hierarchy. The conflict culminates at the Royal Candy Fair, where the pursuit of the Silver Sugar title forces characters to confront their prejudices, their desires for autonomy, and the heavy cost of a society built on the subjugation of others.

Published by Kadokawa Shoten starting in 2010, the series has expanded into multiple manga adaptations and an anime television series. It serves as a fantasy exploration of labor, consent, and the redemptive power of craft.
