In short: When Key’s internal projects stalled in 2015, the studio faced an existential crisis. They needed a story that would make readers cry, or they risked closure. The resulting visual novel, Summer Pockets, transformed a simple island summer into a complex, multi-layered narrative about maternal bonds, time travel, and forgotten memories.

The development of Summer Pockets began after the postponement of several Key projects in 2015. President Takahiro Baba and writer Jun Maeda sought a new concept that could evoke deep emotional responses, specifically aiming to make the audience cry. While many ideas were submitted, Maeda eventually offered his own concept, which was immediately accepted. To avoid thematic overlap with his earlier work, Air, Maeda stepped back from writing the scenario, allowing a team including Kai, Yū Niijima, and Hasama to craft the narrative.

Set on the fictional island of Torishirojima, the story follows Hairi Takahara, who visits the island following his grandmother's death. The game utilizes a branching plot structure where players navigate the lives of various heroines. A central mystery involves Umi Takahara, who travels back in time to the summer of 2000 to prevent her mother, Shiroha, from inheriting a cursed power that leads to her death. The narrative explores these loops through multiple scenarios, including the Alka and Pocket routes, which serve as the story's true conclusion.

The game’s mechanics extend beyond traditional reading, incorporating minigames like table tennis and Islamon, a complex creature-battling system. In 2020, Key released an expanded version, Summer Pockets Reflection Blue, which increased the number of heroines and plot lines. This version added significant depth to the original, including new routes for characters like Miki Nomura and Shiki Kamiyama. The project’s success is underscored by its extensive multimedia footprint, including numerous soundtrack albums, manga adaptations, and a 2025 anime series, cementing its place as a significant entry in the visual novel genre.
