From Bundesliga champion to coaching elite, the enduring career of Sven Bender
In short: Few players navigate the highs of European glory and the lows of injury with such resilience. A mainstay of Borussia Dortmund's golden era, Sven Bender transitioned from a defensive powerhouse to a key figure in the German coaching ranks, following a path defined by both individual brilliance and familial connection.
Born on 27 April 1989, Sven Bender’s footballing journey began in the youth academies of TSV Brannenburg and SpVgg Unterhaching before he joined 1860 München in 2002. His early promise was realized on the international stage in 2008, when he and his twin brother, Lars, were jointly named players of the tournament at the European Under-19 Championship. This period of success set the stage for a professional career marked by significant domestic trophies and high-stakes competition.
Bender’s most decorated era came at Borussia Dortmund, which he joined in July 2009. Following a period of financial instability at 1860 München that forced the sale of both Bender twins, Sven established himself in the Dortmund midfield. He was instrumental in securing back-to-back Bundesliga championships in 2011 and 2012, alongside a DFB-Pokal victory in 2012. Despite facing intense competition for his position and struggling with injuries during the 2012–13 season, he helped the club reach the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final.
While injuries such as osteitis pubis in 2014 prevented him from participating in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Bender remained a vital figure in German football. He earned silver at the 2016 Summer Olympics and later reunited with his brother at Bayer Leverkusen. Since retiring in 2021, his career has shifted toward management, serving in various assistant coaching roles for Germany's youth national teams and Borussia Dortmund, eventually joining Jürgen Klopp's coaching staff for the German national team in July 2026.
