From local amateur sides to the heights of the German Bundesliga
In short: Founded in 1907, SV Elversberg has spent much of its century-long history navigating the lower tiers of German football. Yet, through a series of strategic rises and dramatic play-offs, this Saarland club has recently achieved the unthinkable: a historic ascent to the nation's top flight.
The club's identity has evolved significantly since its founding as FC Germania Elversberg in 1907. After being dissolved in 1914 and reconstituted in 1918 as Sportvereinigung VfB Elversberg, the club underwent further transformations, eventually becoming the independent SV Elversberg VfB 07 in 1952. For decades, the club's journey was defined by the fluctuations of the German league system, oscillating between the Amateurliga Saarland in the 1950s and various fourth and fifth-tier divisions through the late 20th century.
The modern era of Elversberg is marked by a steady climb through the regional leagues. After competing in the Regionalliga Süd and West for many years, the club experienced a brief stint in the 3. Liga before being relegated. They faced significant setbacks in the mid-2010s, including a 2016 promotion play-off loss to FSV Zwickau and a subsequent defeat to SpVgg Unterhaching, which denied them a return to the third tier despite winning their league.
However, the 2020s brought an unprecedented period of success. Under coach Horst Steffen, the club won the Regionalliga Südwest in the 2021–22 season to reach the 3. Liga. They followed this by winning the 3. Liga in 2022–23, securing their first-ever promotion to the 2. Bundesliga on 21 May 2023. After a strong debut in the second tier, they narrowly missed a Bundesliga promotion in the 2024–25 play-offs against 1. FC Heidenheim. Their persistence finally paid off in the 2025–26 season, when they finished as runners-up to secure their historic first promotion to the Bundesliga.
