The only club to have played every single season of elite rugby league
In short: Since 1908, one Australian rugby league club has maintained an unbroken streak of top-flight competition. From the early days of the Eastern Suburbs District club to the modern Sydney Roosters, their history is a rollercoaster of undefeated seasons, devastating droughts, and legendary dominance.
Founded on 24 January 1908 at Paddington Town Hall, the club—originally the Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club—is the only outfit to have competed in every season of the elite level since the competition's inception. The club's early years were marked by incredible feats, including a three-year premiership run from 1911 to 1913 and a period in the 1930s where they achieved an 87–7 victory over Canterbury. They even hold the unique distinction of being the only club to remain undefeated for two consecutive seasons, a feat achieved during the 1935 and 1936 campaigns.
However, the club's history is not without profound struggles. Following a period of decline, the 1960s saw the team fall to its lowest depths, including a winless season in 1966 and a 'wooden spoon' finish in 2009. During the mid-1980s, critics even labeled the club a 'transit lounge' due to the constant turnover of players. The club underwent a significant identity shift in 1967 when they introduced the rooster emblem, and later transitioned through names such as the Sydney City Roosters before settling on the Sydney Roosters in 2000.
Despite these fluctuations, the Roosters have remained a powerhouse, boasting 15 premiership titles, a record equal to the St George Dragons. Their modern era has been defined by periods of intense dominance, such as the 2013 season where they secured the Minor Premiership and the Grand Final, and a consecutive premiership run in 2018 and 2019. Today, led by coach Trent Robinson and captain James Tedesco, the club continues to maintain its status as one of the most decorated and enduring institutions in Australian sport.
