How a basketball franchise rose from the ashes to dominate Australian courts
In short: Born from a 1987 union of two local clubs, the Sydney Kings transformed from a team nicknamed for their tendency to crumble under pressure into a modern NBL powerhouse. Today, they hold six championships, including a historic three-peat, and regularly shatter league attendance records at their massive home arena.
The Sydney Kings emerged in October 1987 following the consolidation of the West Sydney Westars and the Sydney SuperSonics. Despite their ambitious start, the early years were defined by inconsistency and a reputation for fragility. During the mid-1990s, the team earned the derisive moniker 'The Violet Crumbles'—a nod to their purple-and-gold uniforms and a popular chocolate bar—suggesting they would shatter when the stakes were highest. They struggled to find a permanent home, bouncing between the State Sports Centre, the Sydney Entertainment Centre, and the SuperDome, often citing the high costs of larger venues and the travel preferences of their fan base.
The franchise's fortunes shifted dramatically in the early 2000s under coach Brian Goorjian. By recruiting high-caliber talent and implementing disciplined defensive strategies, the Kings secured three consecutive NBL titles between 2003 and 2005, becoming the first team in the league to achieve such a feat. However, financial instability soon followed. In 2008, the club collapsed after its owner, Firepower International, faced insolvency, leading to the termination of their league license. The team remained absent from the NBL for two years before relaunching in 2010.
Since their return, the Kings have undergone a remarkable resurgence. They secured championships in 2022, 2023, and 2026, cementing their status as a perennial contender. This era has been marked by massive fan engagement; the team consistently sets NBL attendance records at the SuperDome, now known as Afterpay Arena. On April 5, 2026, they drew 18,589 spectators for the deciding game of the championship series, a testament to the club's evolution from a struggling startup into a central pillar of Australian professional basketball.
