In short: In 1983, the NSW Rugby League tried to expel the Western Suburbs Magpies from the competition entirely. While other clubs simply vanished, the Magpies fought a prolonged legal battle to keep their spot. Their survival story is a masterclass in institutional resilience against the odds.

The first New South Wales Rugby League tournament included nine original members, including the Western Suburbs Magpies, which began operations at Ashfield Town Hall on 4 February 1908. Their early years were defined by struggle; they won only one match in their inaugural season and are frequently cited as the league's first 'wooden spooners.' This identity as underdogs persisted for decades, even as the club tasted premiership success four times during the mid-20th century, notably in 1930, 1934, 1948, and 1952.

The club's existence was nearly terminated in the 1980s. By 1983, the NSWRFL attempted to expel them, leading to a protracted legal fight. They were eventually saved by Richard Conti, who successfully advocated for the embattled club in 1985. Despite this victory, the 1980s remained grueling, with the club claiming four wooden spoons in a single decade. They eventually relocated to Campbelltown in 1987, a move that did not provide immediate relief, as they finished last in both 1987 and 1988.

The modern era of the Magpies is defined by the 1999 merger with the Balmain Tigers to form the Wests Tigers. This was a survival tactic necessitated by the 'Super League War' of 1997, which forced a cull of teams. Today, while the senior team is a joint venture, the Western Suburbs Magpies continue to operate as a distinct entity, fielding lower-grade sides and maintaining a complex relationship with their parent organization, the Wests Ashfield Leagues Club.
