The high-flying receiver who turned a million-dollar pledge into reality
In short: Braylon Edwards was a collegiate powerhouse, setting records at Michigan before a professional career marked by both brilliance and controversy. Yet, beyond the NFL highlights and legal headlines, he remains defined by a massive, decade-long commitment to Cleveland students.
A standout for the Michigan Wolverines from 2001 to 2004, Edwards achieved unprecedented success in the Big Ten. A unanimous All-American, he was the inaugural receiver in conference history to achieve three straight 1,000-yard seasons. His collegiate dominance was cemented in the 2005 Rose Bowl, where he tied the game record with three touchdown catches against the Texas Longhorns. During his time in Ann Arbor, he also competed in track and field. He recorded a personal best high jump of 2.11 metres.
His professional journey in the NFL saw him drafted third overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2005. While he achieved a Pro Bowl selection in 2007—becoming the first Browns receiver to do so since 1989—his career was often shadowed by off-field incidents. These included a 2009 assault charge involving a local promoter and a 2010 arrest for driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.16, which is twice the legal limit. He also represented the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, and New York Jets during his professional career.
Despite these controversies, Edwards demonstrated significant character through his ADVANCE 100 Program. In 2007, he pledged to pay the college tuition for 100 Cleveland eighth-graders who maintained a 2.5 GPA and completed 15 hours of community service. By 2011, he fulfilled this promise, eventually supporting 101 students with $10,000 scholarships each, totaling $1.01 million. This commitment was not a tax write-off, but a personal mission to provide a path to higher education for students in his hometown. He established the Braylon Edwards Foundation to manage this educational initiative. This effort was launched in May 2007.
