In short: Before he was a legendary coach, Takis Michalos was a wall in the pool. As the goalkeeper for Olympiacos, he disrupted a long-standing era of dominance, helping lead his club to championship glory and eventually guiding the Greek national teams through decades of international competition.

Born in Ampelokip and rising to prominence in the 1960s, Panagiotis 'Takis' Michalos became a central figure in Greek water polo. As the goalkeeper for Olympiacos from 1962 to 1975, he played a pivotal role in shifting the balance of power in the sport. During this tenure, he helped secure Greek water polo championships in 1969 and 1971, effectively breaking the period of dominance previously held by the club Ethnikos.

Michalos's individual career on the international stage was equally distinguished. Representing the Greece men's national team, he competed in the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics, as well as the 1973 World Championship and the 1970 European Cup. His competitive reach extended to the 1975 Mediterranean Games, establishing him as a mainstay of the national squad during a formative era for the sport in Greece.

Transitioning from player to strategist, Michalos enjoyed a prolific coaching career that spanned several decades. He coached ANO Glyfada from 1979 to 1985, leading them to the 1984 Greek Water Polo Cup final, and returned to coach Olympiacos from 1985 to 1986. His influence on the national level was even more expansive; serving as an assistant and head coach for various national squads from 1987 until 2002, he oversaw numerous Olympic, World, and European championships. Notably, he guided the Greek youth national team to a bronze medal in 1997 and held leadership roles for both the women's and men's national teams at the turn of the millennium.
