The versatile defender who conquered Europe through tactical adaptation
In short: From a defensive midfielder in Fukuoka to a Premier League mainstay, Takehiro Tomiyasu’s career is a masterclass in positional fluidity. Whether deployed as a centre-back, right-back, or left-back, his ability to adapt has made him an essential asset for both club and country.
Born in Fukuoka, Japan, on 5 November 1998, Tomiyasu’s journey began in the Sanchiku Kickers football club, where his speed first caught the eye of scouts. His early development was marked by significant positional shifts; while he began as a defensive midfielder at both the elementary level and during his time at the FC Barcelona Academy in Fukuoka, he eventually transitioned to centre-back during his youth with Avispa Fukuoka.
His professional ascent took him through the Belgian First Division A with Sint-Truiden, where he earned Player of the Year honors, and into Italy with Bologna. In Italy, he faced the challenge of refining his individual defensive tactics, often moving between right-back and centre-back roles to mitigate tactical criticisms and manage various injuries.
In 2021, Arsenal secured his services for a reported fee of up to £17m, marking his arrival in the Premier League. While his time in London has been punctuated by frequent muscle and knee injuries, his impact was undeniable, earning him Arsenal's Player of the Month in September 2021 and a fan-voted MVP award in October 2023. Following a period with Ajax and a mutual contract termination in 2025, he returned to the Premier League with Crystal Palace.
