In short: From the small town of Pyrgos to the bright lights of the Premier League, Giorgos Karagounis defined an era of Greek football. A vital member of the historic UEFA Euro 2004 winning squad, his grit and leadership propelled Greece to unprecedented heights on the world stage.

Born in Pyrgos on 6 March 1977, Giorgos Karagounis rose from the youth ranks of Ampelonas FC to become a cornerstone of the Greek national team. His professional journey began in earnest in 1996 with a loan to Apollon Smyrnis, where his high energy and goal-scoring ability in central midfield first caught the eye of scouts.

Karagounis's career is defined by his longevity and his role in Greece's greatest footballing triumphs. He was a key member of the squad that won UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal, famously scoring a long-range goal against the hosts in the opening match. This success was not a fluke; he continued to represent Greece through Euro 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Euro 2012, and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

His club career saw him compete at the highest levels of European football, including stints with Panathinaikos, Inter Milan, Benfica, and Fulham. At Inter Milan, he secured the 2004–05 Coppa Italia, while at Benfica, he became a fan favorite under manager Fernando Santos. By the time he retired following the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he had amassed 139 appearances for Greece, making him the most capped player in the nation's history.

Even in his later years, Karagounis's influence remained significant. During the 2014 World Cup qualification, the 37-year-old veteran played the full 120 minutes in a match against Costa Rica, demonstrating the enduring stamina and leadership that earned him the respect of teammates and coaches alike.
