The goalkeeper who flew for 1,088 minutes without conceding a goal
In short: In the mid-1960s, a Greek goalkeeper earned the nickname "The Bird" for his extraordinary aerial dives. He didn't just stop shots; he maintained a defensive wall so impenetrable that it set a national record that remains unbroken to this day.
Takis Ikonomopoulos became a legendary figure at Panathinaikos, a club where he spent the majority of his professional career. His most remarkable feat occurred between January 17, 1965, and May 9, 1965. During this period, he played 13 consecutive games without allowing a single goal. This stretch of 1,088 minutes stands as the longest such period in Greek football history, a record that has yet to be surpassed. While his defensive reliability was his hallmark, Ikonomopoulos was also known for his dedication to physical preparation. He established a private gym at his home to put in extra training hours, a practice that was notable for its era. By joining that team, he attained the height of continental play, having participated in the 1971 European Cup Final. During that tournament, he wore the jersey of his idol, the legendary Spanish keeper José Ángel Iribar, which he had acquired during a 1970 match between Spain and Greece. His legacy extends beyond his playing days. After retiring in 1979, he transitioned into coaching, eventually leading the Panathinaikos first team during the final four matches of the 2002 season following a coaching scandal. He even served as the club's president in 2017. Today, his name remains etched in the history of the world's top division goalkeepers, where his 1,088-minute scoreless run ranks as the 19th longest ever recorded.
