In short: Before becoming a high-profile Premier League midfielder, Tanguy Ndombele faced rejection from multiple clubs. Despite his obvious talent as a playmaker, scouts dismissed him for his physical condition. His journey from being uncontracted at Guingamp to breaking transfer records is a striking tale of talent versus perception.

Born on 28 December 1996 in Longjumeau, France, to parents from DR Congo, Ndombele's early career was marked by significant setbacks. After finishing his youth career at Guingamp, he was not offered a professional contract. This lack of opportunity forced him to move to Ligue 2 side Amiens, where he worked his way up from the reserves to become a first-team regular during the 2015–16 season. He made his senior debut for the reserves at age 16. This debut occurred in January 2014 while playing for the Amiens reserve side.

During his early development, Ndombele faced a specific hurdle: he was criticized for being "overweight." This physical perception prevented him from being signed by several clubs, including Auxerre, Caen, and Angers, despite scouts recognizing his high-level ability as a playmaker. It was only after establishing himself at Amiens that he earned a move to Lyon in 2017 on a loan deal worth €2 million.

His success at Lyon, where he helped the team secure Champions League football, eventually led to a massive transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in July 2019. The deal, worth €62 million (£55.45 million) plus add-ons, broke the club's previous transfer record. Despite facing scrutiny over his effort levels and a fallout with José Mourinho during his Premier League tenure, Ndombele has achieved later triumphs, securing the Scudetto at Napoli and the Süper Lig with Galatasaray. His career also included a stint in Turkey. He joined Galatasaray on a loan arrangement during the 2023–24 season.
