The high-stakes journey of a Major League closer
In short: From a sixth-round draft pick to a $72 million contract, Tanner Scott’s career has been defined by rapid movement between teams and intense pressure. Discover how this relief specialist rose through the ranks to become one of the most significant arms in the Dodgers' rotation.
Tanner Scott’s path to the pinnacle of professional baseball began in Ohio, where he graduated from Howland High School in 2012. Following his time with Howard College and Notre Dame College, the Baltimore Orioles picked him during the 2014 MLB draft's sixth round. His early professional years were a whirlwind of transitions, moving through various minor league affiliates like the Gulf Coast Orioles and the Bowie Baysox as he refined his ability to pitch out of the bullpen.
His ascent to the Major Leagues arrived in September 2017, but his time in Baltimore was marked by frequent roster shifts. In 2018, despite being the Orioles' sixth-ranked prospect, Scott experienced a period of constant movement between the big league roster and Triple-A Norfolk. By 2023, however, he had established himself as a premier closer for the Miami Marlins, earning recognition as the National League's best reliever for the September/October period and securing his first postseason appearance.
The latter part of Scott's career has been characterized by high-profile trades and massive financial milestones. After a standout 2024 season with Miami that earned him his first All-Star nod, he was traded to the San Diego Padres in July 2024. This momentum culminated in a landmark four-year, $72 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers signed in January 2025. While his time with the Dodgers has seen both incredible feats—such as joining an elite group of pitchers to record a three-pitch save—and significant challenges, including leading the league in blown saves, his impact on the game remains undeniable.
